Recent Innovations in Probiotics and Prebiotics and Gut Health

摘要

The human gut microbiota, comprising a broad range of microorganisms such as viruses, fungi, and bacteria, plays an important role in essential physiological functions including digestion, immune response, and nutrient synthesis. Disruptions in this microbiota are associated with various health issues, from gastrointestinal disorders to metabolic diseases and mental health conditions. There is growing interest in using probiotics and prebiotics to influence the gut microbiota and improve health outcomes. Probiotics, such as strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, are live microorganisms that confer health benefits when ingested in sufficient quantities. Prebiotics, like fructooligosaccharides (FOS), galactooligosaccharides (GOS), and inulin, are nondigestible components that encourage the proliferation of beneficial gut bacteria. This chapter reviews recent advancements in probiotics and prebiotics, focusing on their effects on gut health. Topics covered include emerging probiotics like Akkermansia muciniphila and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, innovations in microencapsulation, novel prebiotic compounds, the development of synbiotics, and the application of omics technologies to gut microbiome research. These developments highlight the transformative potential of probiotics and prebiotics in improving gut health and offer new avenues for the prevention and treatment of various health conditions.
