Therapeutic Role of Probiotics and Prebiotics in Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

摘要

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a common condition affecting the gastrointestinal tract, causes bloating, problems with bowel movements, and recurring abdominal pain. Recent data suggest a role for probiotics and prebiotics in altering the gut flora, providing a possible avenue to treat IBS. Probiotics (live microorganisms that produce health benefits) have demonstrated a range of positive effects on individuals with IBS. These mechanisms include restoring the intestinal barrier integrity, normalization of gastrointestinal motility and visceral hypersensitivity, amelioration of gut–brain interaction, and modulation of the composition of gut microbiota. Although the efficacy of various probiotic strains is debated, some may be helpful in easing symptoms such as bloating and abdominal pain characterizing IBS, including Bacillus coagulans, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Lactobacillus plantarum. Prebiotics, or indigestible carbohydrates that selectively promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, are less straightforward in how they relate to IBS. But prebiotics may likewise help to control the gut microbiota and mitigate symptoms, according to some research. Synbiotics are an investigational method, consisting of both probiotics and prebiotics. In conclusion, there is probable efficacy and sufficient safety to support the use of these probiotics as an adjunct/alternative treatment for people with IBS (and possibly prebiotics, too) amidst their otherwise galaxy of symptoms. Further research is needed to identify the specific pathways and products involved in IBS pathogenesis, as well as what may be the most effective probiotic/prebiotic therapies for managing this enigmatic syndrome. In this chapter, we discuss the intricate relationship between gut microbiota and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) focusing on treatment possibilities using probiotics and prebiotics. It reviews the complex relationship existing between gut microbiota and irritable bowel syndrome, focusing on the possible uses of probiotics and prebiotics as treatments. This chapter underlines the mechanisms through which probiotics load the function of the gastrointestinal barrier, modulate the gut microbiota, regulate the immune system, and alter stomach–brain axis communication in order to alleviate irritable bowel syndrome symptoms.
