This chapter reviews the position and value of Quyi in the history of Chinese literature and art. It explains how “narrative singing” has profoundly influenced early novels, drama, and contemporary popular aesthetics. By examining (1) the transmission of stories, (2) the creation of artistic forms, and (3) the cultivation of aesthetic habits, it lays out the theoretical framework and rationale for this book.
