Subretinal Setae: Treat It or Leave It?

Ophthalmia nodosa is an inflammatory reaction due to harboring foreign bodies such as caterpillar spines and hair in the ocular tissues. This clinical condition has varied manifestations which include eyelids edema, conjunctival injection and chemosis, and multiple corneal abrasions. The subsequent migration of insect hair through ocular tissues may result in nodular conjunctivitis, iridocyclitis, and chronic vitritis. We report a case of ophthalmia nodosa in a male patient who presented to us many months after the injury. By the time he presented, the setae were deep-seated leading to significant ocular complications, and he was managed with vitrectomy and regular follow-up.
