Neurodegenerative Disorders: Types, Classification, and Basic Concepts

Loss of neuronal function in the brain leads to cognitive and physical impairment, making patients dependent. These diseases are common: Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or neurodegenerative disorders (ND). Some research suggest that aging itself can cause neurological symptoms. They propose a theory called “neurotypical aging” to account for the genetic and clinical similarities between different forms of neurodegeneration. Complex neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease have an impact on brain control movement, cognition, and memory. Huntington’s illness and Lou Gehrig’s disease are inherited ailments that kill nerve cells, leading to problems with mobility and cognition, severe behavioral symptoms, weakened muscles, atrophy, and paralysis. Multiple sclerosis disrupts the myelin sheath, which protects nervous system nerve fibers, causing muscular weakness, numbness, and visual impairment. The research gaps, such as the lack of disease-modifying therapies, difficulty in delivering therapies to the brain, lack of predictive animal models, and limited biomarkers for disease diagnosis and tracking, have led to ineffective treatment. Addressing new ideal treatments via gene therapy, stem cell therapy, immunotherapy, neuroprotective agents, and non-pharmacological interventions could result in effective treatments. In-depth research is required to understand the effective mechanisms and to produce an effective treatment for the ND.
