General Education Program as a Vehicle to Promote Holistic Student Development
摘要
In the rapidly changing global landscape, university students confront numerous uncertainties and challenges. The provision of General Education (GE) has become crucial in equipping students with interdisciplinary knowledge, 21st-century skills, and psychosocial competences, enabling them to cope with the challenges. GE offers exposure to multiple disciplines, laying the groundwork for the development of intellectual, psychosocial, and civic capacities. To broaden students’ knowledge base, foster positive values, and develop essential generic skills for navigating a swiftly evolving world and contributing to a prosperous society, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has developed a GE program known as the General University Requirements (GUR). This program encompasses various components, including Leadership Education and Development and Service Learning. Both qualitative and quantitative evaluations have demonstrated the effectiveness of the GUR in promoting students’ holistic development and well-being. This highlights the importance of integrating GE programs into university curricula and provides insightful perspectives on the ongoing development and innovation of GE programs in higher education.
