The current study addresses the problem of violent deaths caused in prisons worldwide due to riots. All globally known prison riot events resulting in 10 or more fatalities have been evaluated. Thus, it was established that very few countries have had this prison problem with excess mortality based on riots, where more than anything it is a fairly frequent phenomenon in Latin America in countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, and since recent times also Ecuador. Once these violent events were characterized, an attempt was made to compare the origins, causes, and effects of the case of Ecuador and its riots from 2021 to 2023 with the other events that occurred worldwide. Finally, based on a comparison of the different events, it was established that the prevention of riots may be based on several improvements in prison conditions, separation by ideological groups or gang memberships, as well as certain restrictions on various communication rights under involvement or control by the military.

摘要
