Unraveling the Dynamics of Vartur Lake Water Quality: A Multifaceted Statistical Exploration
摘要
The water quality of urban lakes is an essential component of green infrastructure, contributing to the environmental sustainability of urban landscapes. This study aims to explore the dynamics of water quality in urban lakes, uncover the underlying processes driving water quality variations, and inform evidence-based decision-making. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of water quality data collected from Varthur Lake, situated in the rapidly urbanizing region of Bangalore, India. The field study encompasses a period from July 12, 2022, to September 20, 2023, during which water quality parameters including pH, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Turbidity, Conductivity, Chloride, and Nitrate were monitored at regular intervals by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB). The dataset underwent thorough preprocessing, including handling missing values through linear interpolation. Descriptive statistics and univariate analysis provided insights into the distribution, central tendency, dispersion, skewness, and kurtosis of each parameter. Notably, the presence of outliers, particularly in parameters such as turbidity, BOD, chloride, and nitrate, indicated potential anomalies in the water quality dataset. Bivariate analysis revealed correlations between different parameters, highlighting inter-dependencies among water quality factors. Strong correlations between COD and chloride and between BOD and chloride suggested higher pollution levels associated with these parameters. The study underscores the complexity of water quality dynamics in urbanizing areas and emphasizes the importance of robust monitoring and management strategies to address emerging challenges. Implementation of targeted interventions based on the findings can aid in improving water quality and preserving the ecological health of Varthur Lake and similar aquatic ecosystems.
