Protocols for the Management of Common Issues in Acute Stroke

As presented in this chapter on Stroke Units, one of the important components for effective specialist stroke care is that units should have clear protocols for the management of common problems affecting acute stroke patients. While it is important that there are always staff on duty with expertise in stroke, there will inevitably be many situations, particularly outside normal working hours, where there will be doctors and nurses who are not familiar with stroke issues and may be tempted to treat or not treat inappropriately.
