Can Generative Al Really Empower Teachers’ Professional Practices? A Quasi-Experiment on Human-GenAl Collaborative Rubric Design

Rubric design traditionally relies heavily on the personal experience and professional understanding of teachers, which, to a certain extent, limits the effectiveness and scope of rubrics and renders the task of designing and assessing particularly burdensome for frontline teachers. Emerging as a technological tool, generative AI enables the generation of text and diagrams by mimicking human thought and creativity. Therefore, this study examines the potential of integrating generative AI into rubric design. In study, teachers collaborated with GenAI to craft rubrics assessing students’ competencies and skills. The findings reveal that GenAI significantly enhances design efficiency and expands the evaluative dimensions of rubrics. By analyzing 38 experimental data sets, the study recommends that teachers collaborate with GenAI in rubric design to harness the full benefits of AI and human expertise. The study offers insights and guidance for achieving a more scientific, precise, and efficient instructional design through human-computer synergy.
