Review Study “Virtual Reality in Biology Education”

The review article evaluates the efficacy of virtual reality (VR) as a teaching tool compared to traditional methods, such as lectures, in biology education. This study analyzes research findings from English and Czech sources, aiming to present a comprehensive summary of VR's impact on learning outcomes, student motivation, and perceptions in biology and medical education. The research addresses several critical questions: the difference between traditional and VR-based teaching, the potential of VR to enhance motivation and knowledge acquisition, student opinions on VR use, variations in student feedback, and factors influencing VR implementation in biology education. Key search terms included “Virtual Reality in Biology Education” and “VR in Medical Education,” focusing on publications from 2019 to 2023 sourced from databases like EBSCO, Web of Science, ResearchGate, and Google Scholar. Out of 255 sources identified, 26 studies met the inclusion criteria, while 229 were excluded due to irrelevance or focus on non-VR educational technologies. The studies reviewed demonstrate a consistent pattern: VR generally enhances student motivation and learning outcomes. For instance, Chuang et al. (2023) found that VR improved high school students’ understanding of human organs, though some experienced dizziness. Christopoulos et al. (2023) noted increased motivation with VR but no significant difference in knowledge retention compared to video instruction. Thompson et al. (2020) and Bennett et al. (2019) reported positive student feedback and improved comprehension of biological concepts, such as cell organelles and cellular processes. In conclusion, the integration of VR into biology education appears to significantly boost student engagement and understanding, despite some logistical and financial constraints. The overall positive student reception suggests a promising future for VR in educational contexts, provided these challenges are addressed effectively.
