Root Development and Growth Resilience in Vegetable Crops

This chapter provides a comprehensive review of root development in vegetable plants, emphasizing the critical adaptations that facilitate successful colonization of terrestrial environments. It details the formation and organization of root systems, highlighting their roles in optimizing nutrient and water uptake. The review underscores the regulatory mechanisms involved in root development, including cell division, elongation, and differentiation. Additionally, it summarizes recent advancements regarding how environmental stresses influence root architecture and function, discussing adaptive strategies such as aerenchyma formation to enhance oxygen availability and the development of specialized root structures to improve resilience under adverse conditions. The importance of symbiotic relationships with mycorrhizal fungi in enhancing nutrient absorption and stress tolerance is also addressed. This chapter aims to provide a thorough understanding of root development in vegetable crops and potential strategy to enhance crop resilience, productivity, and sustainable agriculture.
