Introduction to Vegetable Crop Growth Regulation and Quality Improvement
摘要
Vegetable crops are a complex group of a wide variety of different types of plants grown for human consumption. The edible portions of vegetable crops consist of leaves, roots, hypocotyls, stems, petioles, flower buds, fruits, and seeds, depending on localities and culture. Vegetables are rich sources of essential minerals and vitamins, thus an important component in the human diet. Vegetable production needs intensive care compared to field crops since their growth and development are largely affected by environmental factors. Most vegetables are highly perishable and need appropriate post-harvest management to sustain extended shelf life. In this book, we discuss the intricate processes of vegetable crop growth regulation, exploring the genetic, environmental, and hormonal factors that influence plant development and stress responses. The book also sheds light on the techniques and strategies for improving the quality of vegetable crops, focusing on sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. The current chapter serves as an introduction to the fascinating world of vegetable crops, their growth regulation, and quality improvement.
