In 1838, William Grove first invented Fuel Cells, which he named wet cells or Grove cells. Grove believes that since electricity can decompose water into hydrogen and oxygen, the opposite reaction must be able to generate electricity, bypassing the main step of combustion and directly generating electrical energy from chemical reactions.
