Teaching Computer Science Using Cloud-Based IDE with Perspectives in Inclusivity

Inequities exist in access to computer science education (CSE). The aim of this paper is to present a case for inclusive computer science education and also investigate the use of cloud-based interactive development environment (IDE) in teaching computer science courses. A thorough literature survey on inclusive computer science education was conducted. Purposive sampling was used to select three relevant computer science courses taught by the author using a cloud-based IDE for this study. Questionnaires were administered to students who took the three chosen courses during the first and second semesters of 2023/2024 academic sessions of study at the university of Botswana. There were 241 participant responses in the ratings of zybooks as an IDE for computer science education. The statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) was used to analyse the ratings using descriptive statistics to calculate frequencies and valid percentages. Results of the study suggest overwhelming acceptance of the zybook platform as a good IDE for CSE (frequency f = 86 or 35.7%), very good IDE for CSE (f = 71 or 29.5%), excellent IDE for CSE (f = 61 or 25.3%). Cumulatively, 218 responses (90.3%) rate zybooks as appropriate IDE for computer science education for the reasons of its ease of use, participation activities, clarity, contents, immediate feedback, learner engagement, improved achievements, useful animations, and other reasons. Overall, a model of inclusive CSE is suggested for adoption in this paper and recommendations made on the operational strategy of a centre for inclusive computer science education and research (CICSER).
