Resilient Biharis in Different Roles: The Probable Link Between Resilience and Development
摘要
Focussing on one of the not so well-developed eastern regions of India namely, Bihar, the chapter tries to discern the connection between ‘resilience’ in the character of Bihari people and some wide-ranging indicators of development. A select account from the history of Bihar is briefly touched upon for showcasing resilience displayed by historically acclaimed emperors, revolutionaries, and freedom fighters and spearheading results of their laudable feats. Instances are cited to show how Bihari soldiers have demonstrated exceptional resilience in fighting India’s enemies in harsh terrains or morally devastating situations and Bihari villagers, and farmers, in facing and surviving the regularly erupting natural calamities of their region. Additionally, Bihari youth is presented as a symbol of resilience for demonstrating diligent persistence in cracking tough qualifying examinations for a better future. Attention is drawn towards the mentally tough resilient Bihari youth who are now responding against the antagonistic content and the negative portrayal of Biharis in the print and particularly the social media by using the same communication networks for initiating and driving movement for creating a progressive Brand Bihar and a Bihari identity, proud of its regional character. Finally, the hard working, ‘never say die,’ Bihari migrants are presented as a typical case of resilience who despite being forced to live in poor physical settings and discouraging circumstances, generate remittances that improve the condition of their household and contribute towards the development of their native place. It is argued that resilience shown by the Biharis in different times, domains, and roles, seem to be positively linked with the diverse indicators of development of their region.
