Root Cause Investigation of Leakage in Condenser Tubes of Admiralty Brass
摘要
The present paper describes the investigation of failure of the condenser tubes of admiralty brass which showed leakage during operation. The leakage in the tube was observed near the tube and tube sheet joint near the inlet end of the condenser. The internal surface of the removed leaky tube was examined after cut open, by stereomicroscopy. Optical microscopic examinations were done for the cross section to determine the morphology of the attack and also for microstructural analysis. SEM–EDS analysis was done to determine the elemental content across the thickness. Micro-hardness measurement was also performed. Raman spectroscopy of the internal surface was done to identify the surface film formed during operation. Based on investigation and operating conditions, it was concluded that the degradation was due to occurrence of erosion which led to wall thinning and resulted in leakage. A recommendation for corrective measured to avoid the leakage in the future was made.
