Development of Electrical Power Train for Conversion of Motorcycle with an Internal Combustion (IC) Engine to an Electric Bike

The global transportation sector is facing numerous challenges, including increase in carbon emissions, air pollution, and dependence on fossil fuels. In response, the emergence and rapid growth of electric vehicles (EVs) have garnered significant attention as a sustainable transportation solution. While going for the new electric vehicles, the old internal combustion (IC) engine-driven vehicles are being scrapped. Instead of scrapping these vehicles, a transformation approach can be adopted to convert them into electric vehicles. This paper focuses on the conversion of IC engine bike into electric bike as a retrofitting approach to transform conventional two-wheelers into eco-friendly e-bike. The key work involved in the conversion process include the removal of the IC engine and related parts, designing and selection of electrical system components and assembling. The system designing, component selection procedure including function of each element is discussed in this paper. From the end result, it can be concluded that the conversion of a conventional bike into an electric bike is a much cheaper option than buying a new bike. Also operational efficiency of the converted electric bike is significantly higher than the conventional.
