Power Generation from Food and Garden Waste in Educational Institute

This paper proposes a biomass-based power generating system in educational campus in Delhi-NCR. Food waste from hostel mess or canteen along with garden wastes like grass and leaves are collected and biogas is obtained from them by the process of anaerobic digestion. This biogas is stored and is used as fuel for biogas genset which produces electricity. The digested slurry obtained from anaerobic digestor finds application as fertilizer which adds to the system’s economic value and reduces the cost of biogas to Rs. 1 per kg. Daily approximately 150 kg biomass is available which gives 190 m3 biogas. The power generating system is simulated on Homer software for determining its stability. On simulation, 4.2 kW biogas powered generator produces 36,792 kWh electric energy annually when working 8760 h. On comparing with conventional coal-based power plants, annually 34,927 kg CO2equivalent emissions are reduced. Such type of system eliminates biodegradable waste, produces energy and is environment friendly.
