Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an India-born American poet, novelist, short story writer, academic, and social activist. She was born on July 29, 1956, in Calcutta, India. Her parents were Rajendra Kumar Banerjee and Tatini Banerjee. Divakaruni emigrated to the United States in 1976. She did her M.A. from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, in 1978 and PhD from the University of California at Berkeley in 1985. She is currently the McDavid Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Houston.
