Govindas Vishnoodas Desani was born in Kenya and raised in Sind, a province situated in present-day Pakistan. As an eccentric child given to adventurous living, he was expelled from school in his teens and ran away from home several times. At 17, he went to England alone and studied prolifically in the British Library for a few years. To earn a living, he took up journalism assignments and lectured on Indian affairs. During the late 1930s, he found a job as a BBC speaker. His vibrant temperament impressed several eminent personalities of that time, including Edmund Blunden, a renowned war poet. Blunden praised Desani when he observed that Desani was an “outstanding representative between East and West” (Gandhi 186).
