The youngest among the four children of Anita and Ashwin Desai, Kiran Desai was born on September 3, 1971, in New Delhi. She had her primary education in Pune and Bombay and, for a short period, at St. Joseph’s Convent in Kalimpong, near Darjeeling in West Bengal. At 15, she migrated to England with her mother and then finally settled in the USA. She graduated from Bennington College in 1993 and received two MFAs: from Hollins University, Virginia, and Columbia University, New York.
