Born to Sujan and Shamita DasGupta in Columbus, Ohio, Sayanti DasGupta is a first-generation immigrant who is a pediatrician by training and a middle-grade and young adult novel writer. She got her undergraduate degree from Brown University and her Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health degrees from Johns Hopkins University. Currently, she teaches Narrative Medicine at Columbia University. DasGupta identifies herself as a Bengali American immigrant daughter and draws inspiration from the stories of her family members, who fought in the Indian Freedom Struggle, and from Bengali culture for her fiction, which includes the Kingdom Beyond series (2018–present), Debating Darcy (2022), and Rosewood: A Midsummer Meet Cute (2023). Her other books for young readers are The Demon Slayers and Other Stories: Bengali Folktales (1995), which she co-authored with her mother, and She Persisted: Virginia Apgar (2021), as part of Chelsea Clinton’s She Persisted series.
