Year of the Runaways, The, by Sunjeev Sahota
摘要
Sunjeev Sahota’s second novel, The Year of the Runaways, imagines a year in the lives of precarious Indian laborers in northern England. The novel features four perspectives, told episodically throughout the seasons. Three of them focus on migrants in a rooming house: Randeep, who procures a fake marriage certificate with the help of a sheltered young Sikh woman named Narinder; Avtar, living in the UK on a student visa for a college that he does not attend; and Tochi, a Dalit whose perilous journey to the UK involves crossing illegally through Turkey and France. The fourth perspective follows Narinder, who learns to resist the chauvinism of her father and brother.
