Guyana-born Indian Caribbean and Canada-settled author Cyril Dabydeen’s The Wizard Swami (1985) is about the protagonist Devan’s fascination with becoming a yogi and spreading Hinduism in Guyana. Devan has an ungovernable temper, performs poorly in school, grows long hair, and hits Gosai with scissors when the latter asks him to cut grass instead of teaching him tailoring. Thinking that a wife would make him responsible, his parents, Chattergoon and Lachandai, fix his marriage with Tara at 17. During his marriage, when the Tarlogie Pandit mesmerizes him with his mantras quoting from Hindu texts, he decides to be “a man of God” (20). His wife Tara’s attempts to wake him up from his reverie are brushed aside, compelling her to leave her yogi-husband with her son, Jotish, and daughters, Shanti and Devi.
