Rahul Varma is a Canadian playwright of Indian origin and a socio-cultural activist who uses drama as a powerful and interactive means to promote intercultural dialogue and to “change the world, one play at a time” (Carsignol and Varma 2021). He was born in Lucknow in 1952 and grew up in Uttar Pradesh, India. He came to Montreal with his family in 1975 at 24. His father, Daya Ram Varma, was a scientist, an activist, a staunch socialist, and secularist. He funded and supported progressive diasporic organizations such as the Indian Peoples Association in North America (IPANA), South Asia Research and Resource Center (CERAS), Kabir Cultural Center, and the South Asia Women’s Community Center in Canada. In the sub-continent, Daya Ram Varma championed the cause of peace, social justice, and human and minority rights. Varma inherited from his father a global political consciousness, to which he gave an artistic twist.
