The Travels is of pronounced literary significance as it is the first English book ever written by an Indian. Its author, Sake Dean Mahomet, a former employee of the East India Company, migrated to Europe in 1784 and wrote the book about his experiences of travel throughout India. The book was published in 1794 with a long title: The Travels of Dean Mahomet, a Native of Patna in Bengal, Through Several Parts of India, While in the Service of the Honorable East India Company. It comprises 38 letters, written in the common epistolary style of his times for travel books and novels.
