The Tiger Claw (2004), Shauna Singh Baldwin’s second novel, is a multi-layered narrative that could be read on many levels and from different perspectives. Set in occupied France during the War period of the 1940s, the novel could be read as a spy thriller, an espionage novel of love, loyalty, and betrayal; it could also be read as a story of a Muslim woman’s resistance against a ruthless enemy, who locks up people without charge or trial and violates their rights no end. The parallels between the war-ravaged situation in the novel and the situation in Islamophobic post-9/11 America may appear startling to some.
