Sujata Bhatt was born on May 6, 1956, in Ahmedabad, India, and migrated with her family to the United States in 1968. She studied in the United States, received an MFA from the University of Iowa, and became a writer-in-residence at the University of Victoria, Canada. She currently lives with her husband and daughter in Bremen, Germany. The amalgamation of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds—India, the United States, and Germany—forms the essence of Bhatt’s poetry. Sandten describes Bhatt as “bicultural from birth and migration and tricultural by marriage” (87). Despite experiencing displacement, Bhatt’s poetry reflects the rich tapestry of the Indian diaspora, embracing multiculturalism, and her varied perspectives enrich the understanding of life’s multiplicity. Pamela Paul notes that Bhatt’s poetry reflects her ability to convert difficulties into opportunities and to make home wherever she is (99).
