Sir Ahmad Salman Rushdie was born on June 19, 1947, in erstwhile Bombay to Kashmiri Muslims Anis Ahmad Rushdie and Negin Bhat. After his schooling in Bombay, he left for the UK with his parents and studied at the Rugby School and then at King’s College, Cambridge (1968), from where he got his MA in history. After working as a copywriter for Ogilvy and Mather, for a few years, he became a household name following the success of his second novel Midnight’s Children (1981), which won the Booker Prize and the Booker of Bookers and the Best of Bookers in 1993 and 2008, respectively. Rushdie has authored fifteen novels, a volume of short stories, and five non-fiction books, and co-edited a few anthologies.
