Residue, published in 2014, is Nitasha Kaul’s debut novel. It was shortlisted for the Man Asian Literary Prize in 2009 as an unpublished manuscript. It is narrated from multiple perspectives of diasporic subjects trying to make sense of their fragmented/dislocated lives. The title poignantly suggests the feelings, emotions, and attachments that they are left with in their precarious existence far from their homes. As a nonlinear narrative, with changing coordinates of temporality and spatiality, the novel poignantly captures the diasporic predicament of its characters, who represent both intra-national and international migration and forced as well as voluntary migration. Kaul changes the contours of the narration to fit the stories of its central characters, whose extraordinary mobility is matched by their ability to affiliate with and dissociate from the complexities of relationships. Residue strives to synthesize contrarian drifts of modern existence—the desire to be rooted and the temptation to migrate. It represents an amalgamation of disparate societies/polities through human relationships portraying interfaith marriages and relationships between embattled communities.
