Priya Basil, a British author and political activist, was born in London and spent her childhood in Kenya before returning to the United Kingdom. Born to an Indian father and a Kenyan mother, Basil’s upbringing was a fusion of diverse cultures, a mosaic that would later influence her writing. Her multicultural upbringing profoundly shapes her writing, infusing it with a nuanced understanding of identity, migration, and belonging. Basil’s diverse background and experiences provide a rich foundation for her exploration of these themes within her literary works, which have been translated into multiple languages. Her debut novel, Ishq and Mushq, published in 2007, was longlisted for the Dublin Literary Award, the Dylan Thomas Prize for Young Writers, and shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize. In 2010, Basil became a co-founder of Authors for Peace, a platform that assembles writers and literary figures from all around the world to promote peace, human rights, and social justice.
