Bharti Kirchner was born in Calcutta, India, on June 1, 1940, to Anima and Amiya Nandi. She received her BSc and MSc degrees in mathematics from Calcutta University in 1959 and 1961, respectively. In 1976, she married Tom Kirchner, a software engineer. Before becoming a writer, she worked as a systems manager for Bank of America from 1980 to 1984 and as a systems engineer for IBM from 1984 to 1989. Then, she became a freelance book reviewer for the Seattle Times.
