He graduated from Elphinstone College, Bombay, and did his master’s and PhD (Anthropology) at the University of Chicago in 1976, where he later taught as a professor. Before superannuating in 2021, Appadurai taught at the New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development as a Goddard Professor in Media, Culture, and Communication. He lives in Berlin and teaches remotely at the Bard Graduate Center as a Max Weber Global Professor.
