Braj B. Kachru was born in Srinagar and attended Deccan College in Pune, the University of Allahabad, and the University of Edinburgh for his education. At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he held the positions of Professor of Linguistics, Jubilee Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Professor at the Centre for Advanced Study. Kachru developed and defined the academic field of global Englishes. He was the co-founder and co-editor of The Handbook of World Englishes, a contributor to the Cambridge History of the English Language, and associate editor of the Oxford Companion to the English Language. He has published over 25 books, more than a hundred research papers, and review articles about Kashmiri language and literature, “World Englishes,” as well as applied and theoretical studies on society and language. Some of his books are The Other Tongue: English Across Cultures (1982), The Indianization of English: The English Language in India (1986), Asian Englishes Beyond Canon (2005), and The Handbook of World Englishes (2009).
