Alka Joshi was born in India to Sudha Latika Joshi and Ramesh Chandra Joshi and grew up in Bikaner, Rajasthan, with her two brothers. Her father’s keen interest in environmental research motivated him to pursue academic programs in Iowa and Germany, and he received a doctorate in civil engineering. The family moved to the USA in 1967. Joshi’s mother encouraged her daughter to reject her native cultural limitations when she noted that “American women were afforded a much bigger voice in their lives than Indian women” (Corrigan). Joshi adhered to her mother’s counsel, delaying marriage until 37, and subsequently established a successful career in advertising and marketing. Later in life, she pursued a master’s degree in creative writing, demonstrating her determination to embrace new opportunities and challenge traditional expectations.
