Bharati Mukherjee’s Jasmine (1989) narrates its titular female protagonist’s odyssey from Punjab to California via Florida, New York, and Iowa. Set in both America and India, the novel deals with immigrant experiences in a cosmopolitan setting, celebrating assimilation and highlighting resentment against nostalgia for native history and culture. Jasmine’s struggle symbolizes the restless quest for identity and belongingness of all those expatriates who find themselves marooned in the mob of an alien world of the host country. Since she is a woman, her fiery spirit is also a celebration of the power of womanhood: a woman as a warrior, savior, and adapter and not a submissive victim of the hegemonic structures of her society.
