Sunetra Gupta is a Professor at Oxford University’s Department of Zoology. She studied biology at Princeton University and has a PhD in sciences from Imperial College, London. She has carved a niche for herself across genres, disciplines, and languages, juggling successfully as an acclaimed novelist in English, an award-winning biologist, and a celebratory translator of Tagore’s poems. Gupta divides her time in Oxford between scientific research and writing fiction. Born in Calcutta in 1965, she wrote her first works of fiction in Bengali. She embodies a diasporic Bengali spirit, having spent much of her childhood in Ethiopia, Zambia, Liberia, and England, driven by her father’s constant relocation. However, Calcutta, her homeland, remains pivotal in her life and writings.
