G.V. Desani’s debut novel, All About H. Hatterr, established him as a sophisticated writer of Indian English fiction. Written during the Second World War, this bildungsroman conforms to the trend of British modernism in style and technique; however, its flippant reflections on colonial Indian society through the experiences of its eponymous hero render uniqueness to its form and content. The book opens with a “Warning” about its generic form. The author is compelled to call his work a “novel” due to a negotiatory pact with his literary agent, nicknamed “Indian middle-man.” Though he preferred to identify the work as a “gesture,” the literary agent tells him there is no market demand for such a genre. Knowing that the “novel” commands immediate demand, the author implores him to itemize his work as one. Unlike a well-knit realistic novel that creates an impression of truth, Hatterr employs rambling as a storytelling technique.
