Fish Eyes Trilogy by Anita Majumdar consists of three solo pieces ( Boys with Cars, Let Me Borrow That Top, and Fish Eyes), narrating the intertwined stories of three Canadian teenage girls from the same high school in Port Moody, British Columbia. It has been developed over several years and was first produced on stage as a single play with two intermissions in 2015 by Nightswimming, a theatre company. It has also been produced in audio by CBC Podcasts and Expect Theatre’s PlayMe Podcast. Majumdar has performed all three solos by herself in both versions. The trilogy shares its name with Meenakshi or Meena, the narrator of the final solo, as “Meenakshi,” which literally translates as “fish-eyed” or “someone (a woman) who has fish-shaped eyes.” The title also refers to the wide-angle view that the trilogy offers the audience, looking, from several perspectives, at the race and gender dynamics around specific events at Port Moody High School, where all the three narrators have studied.
