The chapter titled “Aerospace and Thin Films” discusses the importance of thin film coatings in the field of aerospace, mainly with regard to aircraft as well as spacecraft. In this chapter, the literature describes the types of advanced coatings that are used in the aerospace industry for the improvement of performance and for increasing the lifespan of aerospace parts. Thin films are a necessitated thermal protection system used to protect spacecraft during its re-entry and functioning in space. Also, the tribological coatings are tested to improve the way the moving parts interact to reduce the rate of friction and wear; thus, improving the durability and efficiency of the aerospace equipment. The chapter shows how these coatings assist in enhancing the fuel efficiency of aerospace vehicles, cutting down on the rate of maintenance, and making aerospace vehicles safer and have a longer life expectancy. In highlighting these advanced thin film applications in this chapter, it is established that the applications cannot be over-emphasized in the revelation of how aerospace engineering can be developed to perform under demanding circumstances. These findings of this exploration demonstrate that thin films have revolutionized the aerospace industry by improving the performance and features of airplanes and space vehicles.
