The Existing Measures to Protect the VMD Coast
摘要
This chapter illustrates the existing coastal protection measures, which have been constructed along the VMD coast up to date. These measures included mangrove afforestation and the construction of shoreline and offshore structures. Mangrove afforestation involved planting of seeds/propagules and seedlings that are at 6 months old. Seeds/propagules were planted at a high density of 20,000 seeds or propagules per ha while seedlings were planted at a less density of 2500 seedlings and with support provided by rows of poles, made of bamboo, Eucalypt fences, or Melaleuca sticks, concrete cement. The construction of shoreline structures included the construction of sea dykes and revetments to protect the VMD coast from further erosion. Offshore structures, such as Geo-tubes, offshore rock revetments, and offshore concrete breakwaters were installed parallel to the shore to dissipate strong wave energy, allowing sediment to accumulate and mangrove species to grow.
