Pre-assessment of Microplastic Pollution in Pasig River: Occurrence, Distribution and Type

Microplastic pollution poses an escalating threat to aquatic environments, particularly in densely populated urban regions such as Metro Manila. This study examined the occurrence, distribution, and types of microplastics in the Pasig River by sampling water from twelve ferry stations spanning Escolta to Pinagbuhatan. Samples underwent filtration, density separation, and chemical digestion prior to microscopic analysis and polymer confirmation via Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Microplastics were detected at all sampling sites, with the highest concentrations observed at Pinagbuhatan, Escolta, and PUP stations. The predominant forms included fragments, pellets, and fibers. FTIR matching analysis indicated the presence of synthetic polymers, probably polyethylene, polyurethane, polypropylene, polystyrene and polyvinyl alcohol. These findings underscore the pervasive nature of microplastic contamination in the Pasig River and its potential risks to aquatic ecosystems and public health.
