Detection of Microplastics in Milkfish Harvested from Freshwater Farms in Laguna de Bay, Philippines: A Plausible Study and Its Solution

Microplastic pollution is a progressive type of pollution that stems from larger plastic wastes and degrades into smaller particles known as microplastics. These particles may be deposited into the different bodies of water and may contaminate aquatic species through ingestion and inhalation. Milkfish (Chanos chanos) harvested and grown in a freshwater system were collected from four different areas in Laguna de Bay, Philippines. Microplastic samples obtained were observed and captured using an optical microscope and were analyzed using a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR). The most prominent shape identified among the suspected microplastics was fibers, present at all four sites. The average concentration of microplastics detected at the four sites ranged from 2.01 ± 0.06 to 4.10 ± 0.49 particles/fish.
