Regional Anatomy of the Perineum and Its Clinical Application

The perineum can be defined broadly and narrowly. In a broad sense, the perineum refers to all the soft tissue below the pelvic diaphragm that encloses the outlet of the lesser pelvis. In a narrow sense, the perineum refers only to the soft tissue between the anus and the external genitalia. In women, the perineum in the narrow sense in also known as the obstetric perineum, which needs to be protected from tearing during natural childbirth.
