Bioremediation of Marine Actinobacteria

Recently, marine actinobacteria have been getting significant attention for bioremediation of environmental contamination due to their exclusive metabolic abilities and tolerance and resistance to the environmental contaminants’ toxicity. Marine actinobacteria are an eco-friendly, promising, and sustainable approach to bioremediation of environmental contamination such as heavy metals, dyes, pesticides, and hydrocarbons. These actinobacteria synthesize bioactive enzymes and metabolites for transforming the toxic molecules into non-toxic form and decomposing pesticides, hydrocarbons, and polyethylene. This book chapter aims to provide detailed information on the bioremediation of heavy metals, dyes, pesticides, and hydrocarbons by marine actinobacteria. For example, various studies have confirmed that actinobacteria species, including Rhodococcus spp. and Streptomyces spp., can remediate heavy metals from soil and water. Micromonospora, Rhodococcus, Cellulosimicrobium, and Gordonia are promising species for the bioremediation of hydrocarbon contamination. This book chapter also deals with recent research based on heavy metals, textile dyes, pesticides, and hydrocarbons by Marine actinobacteria. These incorporated findings emphasize that the potential of marine actinobacteria is cost-effective, eco-friendly bioremediation of environmental pollutants, whereas further research needs to standardize technologies and validation in pilot scale to field application. This chapter provides an overview of recent research on the application of marine actinobacteria in the remediation of heavy metals, textile dyes, pesticides, and hydrocarbons. The compiled findings highlight their potential as eco-friendly bioremediation agents while also underscoring the need for further research to standardize technologies and validate their efficacy from pilot-scale studies to large-scale field applications.
