Introduction to Marine Actinobacteria

Marine actinobacteria are a highly diverse group of microorganisms inhabiting oceanic niches ranging from shallow coastal waters to deep-sea sediments. Their ecological versatility allows them to play vital roles in organic matter degradation, nutrient recycling, and symbiotic interactions with marine flora and fauna. Over the past decades, these bacteria have gained recognition as prolific producers of secondary metabolites, many of which possess unique structural features and significant bioactivities, including antimicrobial, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. With the growing need for novel therapeutics and sustainable biotechnological solutions, marine actinobacteria have emerged as a critical resource for natural product discovery and industrial innovation. This review provides a comprehensive introduction to their taxonomy, ecological functions, and metabolic capabilities, while also examining advances in cultivation techniques, genome mining, and bioprospecting strategies. Insights into current challenges and opportunities highlight their untapped potential for addressing global health and environmental demands.
