Biofortification of Sorghum Quality Traits Through Agronomic Manipulation

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) is a nutri- cereal crop, widely cultivated for its resilience to harsh environmental conditions and its role in ensuring global nutritional security. However, improving its productivity and quality parameters such as grain yield, protein content, digestibility, and micronutrient composition is essential to maximize its nutritional benefits. This chapter explores agronomic strategies to enhance sorghum quality through optimized crop management practices, soil fertility enhancement, precision agriculture, and stress mitigation techniques. Key interventions include balanced fertilization, biofortification, water-efficient irrigation methods, and the adoption of improved cultivars with superior nutritional traits. Additionally, integrated pest and disease management, along with sustainable farming practices such as intercropping and conservation tillage, contribute to better grain quality and higher productivity. Leveraging modern balanced agronomic advancements can significantly enhance sorghum grain nutrition in addressing malnutrition and food security challenges, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Future research should focus on refining these agronomic strategies to achieve both high yields and improved nutritional profiles in sorghum production, particularly in drylands.
