Renewable Energy as an Enabler of Coastal and Marine Food Security: The Case of Namibia

This chapter explores the role of renewable energy (RE) in enhancing coastal and marine food security in Namibia. It is particularly relevant to policymakers, government agencies, research institutes, small-scale fisheries, and private sector innovators seeking insights into how RE can be effectively integrated into marine food systems. By highlighting the interconnectedness of energy use and marine-based production, the chapter emphasizes the need for sustainable energy solutions to address challenges such as infrastructure limitations, post-harvest losses, and climate impacts. Namibia’s marine food systems are energy-intensive and reliant on fossil fuels, presenting opportunities for RE integration. Various RE technologies and their applications in marine food systems are examined. It also discusses global best practices and their potential to improve efficiency, reduce emissions, and support sustainable livelihoods. Recommendations include expanding RE infrastructure, integrating hybrid systems, supporting small-scale fisheries with solar-powered tools, and fostering innovation through pilot projects and international collaboration. Ultimately, the chapter concludes that transitioning to RE is not merely a technological upgrade but a strategic imperative for Namibia to achieve its blue economy goals, mitigate climate risks, and ensure long-term food security.
