Impacts of Aquatic Pollution on Marine Food Resources

Marine habitats across Africa are increasingly threatened by pollution, posing severe risks to biodiversity, ecosystem health, and food security for millions of coastal inhabitants. This chapter examines the major drivers and consequences of marine pollution across the continent, emphasizing how chemical contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, hydrocarbons, and untreated industrial effluents degrade aquatic ecosystems and compromise marine food resources. In African waters, these pollutants bioaccumulate and biomagnify along the food chain, resulting in toxic contamination of fish and shellfish consumed by humans. Oil spills in the Niger Delta, industrial discharges along the Gulf of Guinea, and nutrient runoff in East African estuaries have collectively reduced fish stocks and disrupted breeding habitats. Eutrophication from agricultural waste promotes algal blooms and oxygen depletion, while the spread of microplastics from the Mediterranean coast to the Indian Ocean islands introduces new physiological and ecological stress on marine organisms. The loss of vital habitats such as coral reefs and mangroves further undermines the productivity and resilience of fisheries, threatening the livelihoods and nutritional security of millions of Africans dependent on seafood. Addressing these challenges requires stronger pollution control measures, effective enforcement of environmental laws, and sustainable management of marine resources. Regional frameworks such as the Abidjan and Nairobi Conventions provide a basis for collaborative governance but need to be supported by national commitment, public awareness, and technological innovation. Integrating ecosystem-based management, improving waste disposal systems, and fostering international partnerships are critical for restoring marine health and ensuring long-term food security. Ultimately, protecting Africa’s marine ecosystems demands a holistic approach that combines scientific monitoring, policy reform, and community participation to build resilient coastal systems capable of sustaining both ecological integrity and human well-being in the face of growing pollution pressures.
